Carrier Oils for Essential Oil Dilution
Carrier oils are plant-derived oils used to dilute concentrated essential oils before topical application. They 'carry' the essential oil safely onto your skin. Jojoba Oil is the gold standard — technically a liquid wax ester, it closely mimics human sebum, has an extremely long shelf life, and is suitable for all skin types.
What Are Carrier Oils?
Carrier oils are mild, skin-safe base oils pressed from the fatty portions of plants (seeds, nuts, kernels). Unlike essential oils, which are highly concentrated and volatile, carrier oils are gentle enough for direct skin application. They serve as a dilution medium, allowing essential oils to be spread evenly and absorbed safely.
Why Jojoba Stands Out
Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is technically a liquid wax ester, not a true oil. Its molecular structure closely mimics human sebum, making it exceptionally well-tolerated by all skin types. It is non-comedogenic, has a very long shelf life due to its oxidative stability, and provides a smooth, non-greasy glide — ideal for massage, facial, and scalp applications.
Dilution Ratios
For daily body care, a 2% dilution is standard: approximately 6 drops of essential oil per 15 ml of carrier oil. For sensitive skin or facial use, reduce to 1% (3 drops per 15 ml). For short-term therapeutic-style use, 3% (9 drops per 15 ml) can be used. Always perform a patch test first.
Safety Guidelines
Not all carrier oils are created equal. Look for cold-pressed, unrefined options stored in dark glass bottles. Avoid mineral-oil-based products marketed as carrier oils. Always patch-test a new carrier oil before widespread use, especially on sensitive or allergy-prone skin.
