Essential Oil Storage Guide

Keep your aromatic botanical investments fresh. Learn how to prevent oxidation, avoid heat, and store safely.

The Science of Oil Degradation

Pure essential oils do not contain water, which means they do not support bacterial or mold growth. However, they are highly sensitive to oxygen, light, and heat. When exposed to these three elements, the chemical bonds inside the oils begin to change, a process known as oxidation.

Oxidized oils lose their crisp, clarifying aroma, turn thick or cloudy, and are much more likely to cause skin sensitization or irritation if applied topically.

Four Keys to Preserving Shelf Life

1. Amber Glass Amber Bottles

Always keep essential oils in their dark amber glass bottles. The glass protects the volatile molecules from UV rays, while being completely non-reactive.

2. Seal Tight After Use

Exposing oil to open air triggers oxidation. Cap the bottles tightly immediately after dispensing drops to minimize oxygen exposure.

3. Keep in a Cool, Dark Place

Store bottles in a cabinet, drawer, or dedicated box. Avoid window sills, bathrooms (due to steam and heat fluctuations), or proximity to heaters.

4. Control Oxygen Headspace

When a bottle is half-empty, the remaining oxygen in the bottle speeds up oxidation. Consider transferring to smaller amber vials to reduce air headspace.

Safety & Domestic Storage Rules

Storing essential oils safely at home is essential to protect children and pets from accidental poisoning or chemical exposure.

Storage Precautions

  • Out of Reach of Children: Essential oils look like small perfume bottles but are highly toxic if swallowed. Keep them locked away or on high shelves.
  • Flammability Warning: Pure essential oils have low flash points. Keep them away from candles, open fires, gas stoves, or other combustion sources.
  • Avoid Spills on Furniture: Essential oils act as solvents and can dissolve varnishes, paints, or synthetic finishes on wood tables. Wipe up spills immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do essential oils need to be stored in dark glass bottles?

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight can break down the volatile organic compounds inside essential oils, leading to rapid degradation and loss of therapeutic scent quality. Amber or dark cobalt glass blocks these harmful rays.

Can I store essential oils in plastic bottles?

No. High-concentration essential oils contain powerful natural terpenes that can dissolve or corrode many types of plastic over time, leading to chemical leaks and oil contamination.

Should I keep my essential oils in the refrigerator?

Yes. Storing essential oils in a dedicated refrigerator at constant cool temperatures is an excellent way to slow down oxidation, especially for delicate citrus oils like Orange and Bergamot.
